In the basement of his institute
ocularist Alfred Greiner keeps
his stock of raw materials for
making artificial eyes. Cryolith
glass tubes come in various
hues of white from which Greiner
selects one to match a patient’s
healthy eye. The materials he
uses come from traditional
glassworks in Thuringia.
