FINDING TREASURE
Thorough archaeological prospection
goes hand in hand with the con-
struction of the Northern European
natural gas pipeline NEL. After the
removal of topsoil along a stretch of
farmland near Syke south of Bremen,
Jan Stemmler probes the site for
metal artifacts with a metal detector.
Close by, Stemmler found the famed
Gessel Hoard, a four-pound hoard of
gold from the Bronze Age.
