TREE RING CALENDAR
A section of oak wood cut from a
plank belonging to the wreck of a
trade ship was sampled for age de-
termination by dendrochronology.
Conservator Birgit Bartel declares
that the timber was cut in the
winter of 1448/49.
The shipwreck was discovered by
underwater archaeologists in the
Greifswald Bodden, a basin in the
southwestern Baltic Sea, during
construction of the NEL pipeline.
