FIBER ANALYSIS
At a makeshift lab in Schwerin, con-
servator Birgit Bartel takes samples
of fibrous caulking material from a
plank of the Greifswald Bodden ship-
wreck. Hemp, cotton or wool soaked
in tar were used to seal the seams
between a ship’s planks. The wood
itself has already been sampled for
dendrochronology.
