SIGN LANGUAGE
Stephanie Heitmann, a dental tech-
nician in Hamburg, Germany, is deaf.
She communicates in German Sign
Language (DGS), which is an inde-
pendent language with its own dis-
tinct grammar. DGS relies not only
on manual signs but uses also facial
expression and body posture.
The gesture shown here means ‘sign
language’.
